Fosse
‘Fosse’ the musical stars the choreography of 9 time award-winner Bob Fosse, known for his thoroughly modern style and signature moves such as snapping fingers, rakishly tilted bowler hats, swivelling hips, and rolling shoulders. The production is a journey in song and dance through Bob Fosse’s extraordinary career and stars 32 of Broadway’s hottest and most talented dancers. ‘Fosse’ includes rarely seen dance numbers from the choreographer’s earliest works, as well as classic Fosse numbers like ‘Steam Heat’, ‘Big Spender’, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’, ‘Dancin Man’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’.
Johannesburg Of Yesteryear
Ardent painter and water-colour artist Mary Hume exhibits a remarkable collection of paintings and sketches. Mostly depicting buildings and homes, her work provides enlightening glimpses into a Johannesburg of old. For over 20 years, Mary scoured the city sketching and painting every type of building from slums to architectural masterpieces. This promises to be a nostalgic experience for many especially as a few of the sites depicted have changed dramatically.
Le Gallopin
With its delightful 1876 décor of wood, brass and tulip lamps, this independently owned, very friendly institution feels like a museum of what a true Paris brasserie should be. What’s more, details such as the good wine list – the Guigal Côte Rôtie at 297F – and tasty rye bread served with the oysters show a proud desire to please. Try the ‘oeufs dur à la mayonnaise’ with a ‘macédoine’, the nicely prepared pig’s foot served with decent béarnaise sauce and chunky frites, or the steak served with pepper sauce. Finish with chocolate tart and a huge slice of meringue.
Umka
The children’s centre Umka offers both education and entertainment. The word Umka comes from the word ‘um’ meaning the mind or the intellect. The centre has its own planetarium, one of only two in the city, and lessons on the evolution of the universe and solar eclipses. You can visit all the exhibits – which also include a green house and a game room – for less than a dollar.
