The Nutcracker
More than a beautiful ballet, ‘The Nutcracker’ is an extraordinary holiday tradition shared by every generation. Featuring every bit of splendor one would expect, the Philadelphia Ballet’s performance of George Balanchine’s masterpiece is a true holiday treasure. Public loos
Florence (indeed, most of Italy) has never been the best place to find a public toilet ‘in extremis’. Either you can’t find one, or when you can, it’s filthy. The city council, however, must have become aware of the problem as they have built new ‘gabinetti’ throughout the city and published a booklet designed to help tourists find the nearest one. The washrooms are all properly cleaned, all but one have baby-changing facilities and many are wheelchair accessible. There is a charge (L500-L1.500) and all have specific opening hours. The leaflets are available from tourist offices, bars and news stands.
Kent
Vienna’s best-loved kebab house comes into its own during the summer months when patrons are able to enjoy its large shady courtyard, housing possibly the largest satellite dish outside the Pentagon. The clientèle is a colourful mixture of the 16th district’s multi-ethnic community, local bohemians and pensioners, all attracted by excellent grilled meats and a wide range of meze-style appetizers at extremely reasonable prices. Located in the heart of Vienna’s second largest fruit and veg market – the Brunnenmarkt – the Kent is worth the trek out to one of Vienna’s up-and-coming districts.
