The Salon

During the holiday season a harpist plays classical compositions and holiday music as shoppers take a break for afternoon tea. Guests settle back to sip tea and champagne in The Salon, a room circa 1920 decked out in seasonal finery and offering views of busy Magnificent Mile. ‘Traditional Afternoon Tea’ features a selection of several teas, finger sandwiches, pastries and scones with Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry preserves. ‘The Avenue Tea’ adds a plate of fresh strawberries with whipped cream and a glass of Louis Roederer Brut Premier champagne.

Christkindlmarket Chicago 2000

This annual market is patterned after the famous Nuremberg outdoor Christmas market dating back to 1545. More than 40 traditional timber cabins of mostly European vendors offer merchandise ranging from wooden toys, hand-blown glass ornaments and brightly-painted nutcrackers to beer steins, lace and blouses from Plauen and hand-made wool sweaters, scarves and mittens. Christmas goodies include cookies, smoked ham and ‘stollen’, (sweet yeast bread sprinkled with powdered sugar and packed with fruit and nuts), bratwurst, schnitzel or potato pancakes. Beer, hot spiced glüwein and hot cider are also available.

Laurel & Hardy Retrospective

The Film Archive has put together a three-month Laurel and Hardy retrospective including all the previously available shorts, their most important full-length features and their first two-act films, ‘The Lucky Dog’ and ’45 Minutes from Hollywood’. Also featured are rare silent films such as ‘Why Girls Love Sailors’, ‘Slipping Wives’, ‘Flying Elephants’ and the ultimate pie-fight movie, ‘Battle of the Century’.

Jumping Amsterdam

The country’s oldest and most diverse indoor show jumping and dressage event brings in horseheads from around the world to watch the qualifications for the World Cup. Many other equestrian disciplines are also featured. On Saturday there are special events for children. For a mere 5 guilders, they will not only have access to pony-rides, inflatable bouncing tents and all the international contests, but they will also receive an ice-cream and a ‘surprise bag’.

Fosse

‘Fosse’ the musical stars the choreography of 9 time award-winner Bob Fosse, known for his thoroughly modern style and signature moves such as snapping fingers, rakishly tilted bowler hats, swivelling hips, and rolling shoulders. The production is a journey in song and dance through Bob Fosse’s extraordinary career and stars 32 of Broadway’s hottest and most talented dancers. ‘Fosse’ includes rarely seen dance numbers from the choreographer’s earliest works, as well as classic Fosse numbers like ‘Steam Heat’, ‘Big Spender’, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’, ‘Dancin Man’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’.

Sunday Drum School

It’s not every day that your favourite pop star offers to teach you all he knows. But Jonathan Yip, the drummer from local band Beyond, has no qualms about such a move. Beyond were once phenomenally successful, offering a guitar pop alternative to sickly-sweet Canto-pop soloists and remain revered. Each Sunday he and local jazz percussionist Anthony Fernandez teach budding stars of the future the art of drumming. As you’d expect, the course is proving very popular.
