Stand der Dinge (1)

Taking a swipe at modern media, this new exhibition was put together by the renowned French curator Catherine David for one of the city’s hippest art venues, Kunstwerke. Filling every nook and cranny of the former margarine factory, ‘State of Play (1)’ brings together 12 artists from different cultural backgrounds and countries including France, Israel, Brazil, Germany, Lebanon, United States and China. Using mainly photographs and video installations, the artists employ a variety of methods to express their disapproval of clichés and oversimplification.

Lido di Giannella beach

‘L’Argentario’, the rocky peninsula on the southern coast of Tuscany, is one of the most pleasant beach areas in the region, but due to the trendy Roman and Milanese ‘yachties’ who swarm to the place, it can be pretty expensive. One exception to this is the friendly Lido di Giannella, situated on the long stretch of sand known as the Giannella. It is a hotel, restaurant, bar, private beach and has long chairs and umbrellas, for rent by the day, in an area where such things are hard to come by.

Racing: The Fair Grounds

Thanksgiving means far more than turkey dinners in New Orleans, it’s also the opening day of the city’s race track, the Fair Grounds. The 2000-2001 season begins with a series of big races, the Thanksgiving Handicap on opening day (November 23), the Old Hickory Stakes (November 25) and the Pontalba Stakes (November 26). While the Fair Grounds is not one of the première US tracks, it’s a lively, well-run operation that showcases Southern-bred horses and occasionally hosts quarterhorse racing.
